Mac OS X 10.5 client compatibility with HELIOS servers

HELIOS UB+ servers

The upcoming HELIOS UB+ server suite is fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 clients (aka Leopard). The following clients and programs have been tested:
  • AFP clients are compatible
  • New HELIOS UB+ Bonjour printer driver works with 10.4 and 10.5 clients
  • HELIOS Admin works
  • All HELIOS Tools are working, including:
ICC-Tagger, touch, LanTest, File System Test, and Icon Collector

HELIOS UB servers

The following problems are known:
  • Printing:
The “HELIOS TCP Printer” does not work. Apple removed SLP support from the system which affects our UB printer driver, basically is does not allow to choose a printer. The UB+ driver cannot be used because the old UB print spooler does not support Bonjour printers.

HELIOS is working on a solution which will be available within this month.

A possible workaround for Mac OS X 10.5 clients is to use an AppleTalk or Remote LPR based printer queue. The disadvantage is that the PPD must be manually installed on Mac OS X 10.5 and that Remote LPR jobs are limited to 2 GB in size.
  • HELIOS LanTest (UB) note for 10.5:
HELIOS LanTest will crash during the LanTest launch if no printer has been added. After a printer queue has been added it works.

Mac OS X 10.5 workstation or server running as a HELIOS server

The old HELIOS UB based server solutions don't work with Mac OS X 10.5 workstation or server.
The new HELIOS UB+ based server solutions fully support Mac OS X 10.5 server or workstation.

Update 07 Dec 2007:

Mac OS X 10.5 clients do currently not support password protected volumes.
