The amount of digital data on our planet is rapidly increasing. Everything is and will be digitized. And the digital flow does not ebb away. In 2006, the digital universe comprised 161 Exabytes. Accordingly, each and every one of the almost 6,7 billion people in the world accounts for about 24 Gigabytes. By 2010 this number will have increased sixfold.

The majority of this data is produced by private individuals, but companies of any size and industry as well as their IT departments have to manage this data – and are thus involved, in some form or other, in its storage, provisioning or transmission.
