HELIOS Base UB2 User manual (Version 3.0.0)

Welcome to HELIOS Base

The idea behind it

HELIOS Base builds the platform in the modular HELIOS products line. It is comprised of the LPR printing system, printer drivers, the HELIOS Installer, Unicode support, ICC profiles, utilities, libraries, the “license” program, which lets you enter software licenses for all HELIOS products, the HELIOS Service Controller, the HELIOS Update Installer, and tools (“start-helios”, “stop-helios”, etc.).

Contents of the software package

Your HELIOS software package includes the distribution media, software manuals (depending on the products you purchased), and an “Activation Key Request” form which serves to request the individual key (kind of password) you need to license and run the software.

License information

Your individual software activation key has to be entered during the server installation process. Without the activation key, you can run the software in a 3-hour demo mode only. The generation of your key is based on the machine ID of your server, your HELIOS product serial number, and the number of users you have licensed the software for. The “license.txt” file on the installation media contains the full license terms.

HELIOS user expansion licenses

Keep in mind that – in case you buy several HELIOS user expansion licenses – you should make a long-term decision about which license you want to use on which server machine and about which license you want to use as the base product for expansions. These expansions always remain bound to the original EtherShare, PCShare or WebShare product.

What you have to do

We have enclosed with our software package an “Activation Key Request” form which must be used for obtaining the key.

hsymInstruction

The form already contains your 8-digit HELIOS product serial number. You have to add your (“End-user”) name and address, and the machine ID of your server.

The machine ID consists of “8-2” digits. The last two characters serve to identify the make of the machine. We have implemented in our product installer a program that displays the machine ID automatically. So, to find out your server’s machine ID, proceed as follows:

Note:

For Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux machines, the machine ID is provided by a HELIOS USB-dongle, which you receive from your dealer, and which you have to plug in first.

Mount our distribution media and follow the instructions given in the accompanying booklet to open the “HELIOS Installer” main menu (Fig. .1). Note that the commands that are required to mount the CD are different on different platforms. That is why we have listed all of them in the CD booklet. After writing down the machine ID, which is marked in Fig. .1, quit the menu.
