1 About the chapters of this manual

In the following, we give a brief summary of each chapter in this manual. These summaries facilitate finding the information you are looking for.

Chapter 2 “Using the manual” gives information about the manual version, the structure of contents, and the meaning of font and syntax conventions.

Chapter 3 “An introduction to HELIOS Base” gives background information on the product and its services and tools, and on network hardware and topology in general.

Software installation on the server

Chapter 4 “The Base product” covers the installation of the Base software, migration issues, data backup, and licenses.

Chapter 5 “The Base product (Windows)” covers the installation of the Base software for Windows platforms.

Chapter 6 “HELIOS directory structure” presents the HELIOS directory structure and analyzes the content of each subdirectory in detail.

Chapter 7 “HELIOS Admin” covers the HELIOS administration client, which allows the user to configure users, groups, volumes, printer queues, etc.

Chapter 8 “HELIOS utility programs” introduces and describes the HELIOS Base utilities.

HELIOS services

Chapter 9 “The HELIOS Admin server” describes the “heladmsrv” program on the server.

Chapter 10 “The authentication server” describes how this server module administers login and authentication processes, e.g via AD/PDC, LDAP, and NIS. In addition, it explains the “authutil” tool.

Chapter 11 “The notification server” introduces this server module, which notifies about changes in queues, log files, etc. in real time.

Chapter 12 “DHCP server” explains how to configure the HELIOS DHCP server for both static and dynamic IP address distribution.

Chapter 13 “The desktop server” describes the function and configuration of the desktop server, which is responsible for managing file and directory IDs in network volumes.

Chapter 14 “The HELIOS Service Controller” is a feature in HELIOS Base. It prevents the failure of a server process for a single client from bringing down other served clients on the network.

Chapter 15 “Advanced printing system” is the printing system of HELIOS Base. This chapter explains how it is configured through the server configuration file “printcap”.

Chapter 16 “mDNS (Bonjour)” gives an introduction on the mDNS concept, the coexistence with Apple Bonjour, etc. In addition, it describes the HELIOS mDNS server and the HELIOS utility “mdnstool”.

Chapter 17 “Remove the software” is a useful guideline on the uninstallation of the HELIOS software from the server.

Chapter 18 “HELIOS Update Installer” allows easy downloading and installation of updates.

Chapter 19 “Preferences” lists all preferences of HELIOS Base, and it explains what they effect when set.

Chapter 20 “Technical support” provides information on support options, keys and updates. In addition, generic error messages as well as those from the “license”, “desksrv” and “rebuild” processes are explained.

Additional information

Appendix A “Windows and Mac file names” gives information on Windows and Mac file names.

Appendix B “IP configuration – Reference Part” gives background information on IP addresses, masks and how to control access to the host.

Appendix C “Technical notes” describes the structure of the HELIOS printer, server, and sync log files (which can be inspected in the HELIOS Admin Lists menu), lists the TCP ports that are used by the HELIOS software, shows how to modify PostScript RIP inits in HELIOS Admin, describes error messages, etc.

Appendix D “Glossary” explains some product-related terminology.
