1 About the chapters of this manual
In the following, we give a brief summary of each chapter in this manual. These summaries facilitate finding the information you are looking for.
"Using the manual" explains how to read and understand the manual. The chapter gives information about the manual version, the structure of the contents, and the meaning of font and syntax conventions.
"An introduction to HELIOS Base" gives background information on network hardware and topology in general, and - for those who are already familiar with the product - it explains the new features in Base.
Software installation on the server
"The Base product" covers the installation of the Base software and the "license" program.
"HELIOS directory structure" presents the HELIOS directory structure and analyzes the content of each subdirectory in detail.
"HELIOS Admin" introduces the new HELIOS administration client, which - similarly to EtherShare Admin - allows the user to configure users, groups, volumes, printer queues, etc.
"HELIOS utility programs" introduces HELIOS utilities, e.g. the HELIOS Unicode conversion tool "uniconv".
HELIOS services
"Service Location Protocol (SLP)" is a feature of HELIOS Base, which allows users to find available services without any knowledge of host names.
"The HELIOS Admin server" describes the "heladmsrv" program on the server.
"The authentication server" describes how this new server module administers login and authentication processes.
"The notification server" introduces the new server module, which notifies about changes in queue, log files, etc. in real time.
"The desktop server" describes the function and configuration of the desktop server, which is invisible to users, but is responsible for storing icon and application data, and for managing file and directory IDs for network volumes.
"The Service Controller" is, like SLP, a feature of HELIOS Base. It prevents the failure of the server process for a single client from bringing down all the served clients on the network.
"HELIOS LPR printing system" is the printing system of HELIOS Base. This chapter explains how it is configured through the server configuration file "printcap".
"Uninstalling the HELIOS software" is a useful guideline on the uninstallation of the HELIOS software from the server.
In "Preferences" all preferences of HELIOS Base are listed, and it is explained what they effect when set.
"The HELIOS Update Installer" introduces the improved HELIOS program which is now automatically installed during the software installation.
Additional information
"Windows and Macintosh characters" shows the differences in displaying Windows and Macintosh characters.
"IP configuration - Reference Part" gives background information about IP addresses, masks and how to control access to the host.
