Welcome to PDF Handshake 2.0
The idea
behind it
PDF already is a very popular file format. With the Acrobat Distiller software, PDF files can be generated on every platform, i.e. Macintosh, Windows, or UNIX, and with Acrobat Exchange (or Reader) they can always be viewed, edited, and printed - no matter what platform you happen to use. The HELIOS PDF Handshake offers PDF support that goes even further. Together with an EtherShare 2.6 printer queue, it lets you print PDF files from Acrobat Exchange (or Reader) or directly from your server while applying color matching to all elements in the document (images, illustrations, and text), and it also allows you to print separations from either composite or pre-separated PDF documents. Alternatively - if you are using our EtherShare OPI 2.1 software - you can use the PDF Handshake settings to generate layout files from PDF originals. All the benefits that are offered by the OPI Server will then be available to PDF files as well. Last but not least, PDF Handshake offers (for EtherShare OPI users only) the possibility of exporting PDF files for further use in an imposition program, and a server command line tool that transforms PDF into EPSF for a pure EPSF workflow.
The Acrobat Distiller and Exchange products are not included in the PDF Handshake software package. Both applications are not necessarily required for working with PDF Handshake - as long as you receive PDF files from a customer and do not need to edit them again.
Course of
development
Our PDF Handshake software is an extension to EtherShare 2.6 and EtherShare OPI 2.1. It can be expanded in functionality by HELIOS Print Preview 1.1.
PDF Handshake 1.0 was first released in spring 1998. The related software manual was published on March 25, 1998. In the meantime, PDF Handshake's functionality has been extended significantly. This manual describes new features or changes in behavior of the PDF Handshake product as released on our current HELIOS CD-ROM.

Note: If you need information about a certain update or update level, please check the distribution CD-ROM or the HELIOS Web site:

Contents of the software
package
The PDF Handshake software package includes an ISO 9660 CD-ROM, a software manual, and an "Activation Key Request" form that serves to request the individual key (kind of password) you need to license and run the product.
License
information
For using PDF Handshake, you need a full EtherShare 2.6 license and a PDF Handshake software activation key, which has to be entered during the installation process. Without an activation key, you can only run the software in demo mode, meaning that a demo banner will be printed on every page, and access to the product's fonts will be restricted. The generation of your key is based on the serial number of your EtherShare base product and the serial number of your PDF Handshake copy. Please keep in mind that - in case you have several EtherShare licenses - you should make a long-term decision about which license you want to use with PDF Handshake. All "expansions" (like user expansions, PDF Handshake, or EtherShare OPI) always remain bound to the original base product, meaning that if you want to transfer PDF Handshake to another server later (which is allowed under certain conditions) you have to transfer the EtherShare base license to that server as well.
What you have to do
We enclose with our software package an "Activation Key Request" form that has to be used for obtaining the key.
The form already contains your 8-digit PDF Handshake serial number. You have to add your ("End user") name and address, and the serial number of your EtherShare 2.6 base product.
Fax or mail the "Activation Key Request" form to HELIOS Software GmbH, Steinriede 3, 30827 Garbsen, Germany, Fax: +49 5131 709325. We only accept requests by fax or regular mail.
What you will get in return
On receipt of your request form we will generate your individual activation key and then send you an "Activation Key Reply" summarizing the data you need for software activation, namely:
Figure 0-1 shows an example of an "Activation Key Reply".
