1 About the chapters of this manual
In the following, we give a brief summary of every chapter of this manual. These summaries are supposed to help you find the information you are looking for.
Chapter 2 "Using the manual" explains how to read and understand the manual. The chapter gives information about the manual version, the structure of the contents, and the meanings of font and syntax conventions.
Chapter 3 "An introduction to PDF Handshake" gives background information. It introduces a very new idea, namely the idea of using the PDF file format as exchange format in a prepress environment or in the printing business. Several workflows are illustrated.
Chapter 4 "Installation" lists the program's system requirements, and describes the installation procedure on the server and the installation of the Macintosh tools. It also explains how to uninstall parts of the software.
Chapter 5 "Before getting started" summarizes some general information about the structure and behavior of PDF Handshake.
Chapter 6 "Exploding/concatenating files using "pdfcat"" explains the usage of the server command line tool "pdfcat". It gives directions for re-arranging existing PDF files for better use within a certain workflow.
Chapter 7 "Setting up PDF Handshake with the EtherShare Admin" gives directions for choosing PDF Handshake settings with the EtherShare Admin program on a Macintosh. The chapter describes the relevant dialogs which may offer different options, depending on whether or not you are using EtherShare OPI.
Chapter 8 "Editing pre-separated PDF documents" describes the "HELIOS Plate Control" plug-in for Acrobat Exchange that can be used to edit the separation plate information in pre-separated PDF documents.
Chapter 8 "Editing pre-separated PDF documents" describes the command line tool "pdfprint" that allows you to print PDF files directly from your server without opening an application. It also describes the features offered by our print plug-in for Acrobat Exchange (or Reader) on Macintosh. With this plug-in and with "pdfprint" you can e.g. print separations and make use of PDF Handshake's color matching features.
Chapter 10 "The standard OPI workflow using PDF files" describes how to use PDF files in an OPI environment. It shows how to tag color profiles or ICC profiles to PDF high-resolution files, and it explains the default behavior of the OPI Server when handling PDF files.
Chapter 11 "Export for Imposition with EtherShare OPI" shows how to export PDF files (as PostScript files) for further use in an imposition software. Final printing from the imposition software to the output device requires EtherShare OPI.
Chapter 12 "Transforming PDF into EPSF" explains the use of the "pdftoeps" command line tool that transforms PDF files into EPSF high-resolution files for use in an EPSF-only workflow.
Chapter 13 "Example workflow" illustrates a possible production environment where a customer uses Microsoft Word for document creation and submits PDF files to his printers.
Chapter 14 "Support options" explains the support options for HELIOS products and helps you set up an error report.
Chapter 13 "Example workflow" is a new feature of PDF Handshake to automate the PDF creation of any PostScript job. Configuration and setup is easy and comfortable through the EtherShare Admin.
Chapter 14 "Support options" is PDF Handshake's innovative PDF Internet Printing feature. It supports the remote delivery and printing of PDF documents over the Internet allowing simple transfers and printing over the Internet using any web browser.
Appendix A 1: "Creating PDF files using Acrobat Distiller" gives instructions on how to set up the job options of the Acrobat Distiller software in order to create PDF files that are best suited for being used with PDF Handshake.
Appendix A 2: "Colors, color matching, proof printing - basic concepts" gives background information about color management.
Appendix A 3: "Using PDF Handshake with ColorSync 2 XT 2.1" describes how our ColorSync 2 XT software for QuarkXPress supports and expands PDF Handshake.
Appendix A 4: "About fonts" gives some background information about fonts, different types of fonts and the problems that can arise during printing. The appendix also explains how PDF Handshake deals with fonts.
Appendix A 5: "The fonts we deliver" contains a list of the PostScript 3 fonts we include in our software package.
