1 About the chapters of this manual
In the following, we give a brief summary of every chapter of this manual. These summaries are supposed to help you find the information you are looking for.

2 "Using the manual" explains how to read and understand the manual. You will, at first, find a glossary including a list of abbreviations. Furthermore, the chapter gives information about the manual version, the structure of the contents, and the meanings of font and syntax conventions.

3 "An introduction to OPI" gives background information. For readers who have little practical experience with OPI, it discusses basic concepts. After that - for those, who are already familiar with the product - it explains the features that are characteristic of the new EtherShare OPI version 2.1.

4 "Installation" covers all questions that might arise during installation. The chapter contains a list of hardware and software requirements and gives detailed instructions on how to install EtherShare OPI from our CD-ROM and then verify the installation.

5 "Before getting started..." gives some background information about image file formats, color modes, image modifications, and printer characteristics. The explanations may be very useful for you, because they reveal how the settings you choose may influence your workflow. The chapter also describes how EtherShare OPI 2.1 behaves in specific situations.

7 "Using EtherShare OPI 2.1" describes different utilities you may use to tune your layout files for specific purposes. The chapter then gives instructions on how to place layouts in a layout document and on how to set up the printer options in different OPI-compatible applications. This chapter is meant for those who simply want to use EtherShare OPI 2.1 and do not care about the programming or the administration of the program.

8 "Reference guide" describes the OPI server on the UNIX host and the programs that are available to change several OPI parameters manually. Additionally this chapter informs about the differences between EtherShare OPI 2.1 and the older 1.x program version.

10 "Technical support" gives advice on how to set up a complete error description. Such a description is indispensable if you want to report a particular problem - you cannot solve by help of the documentation - to your dealer or to the HELIOS support department.

A 4: "Notes for PCShare users" explains the settings that are necessary if you want to use the EtherShare OPI features from a PCShare client on a Windows PC.
