HELIOS Base UB for Windows User manual

3 HELIOS advanced printing system

3.1 General

The HELIOS printing system is described in detail in the HELIOS Base manual. However, here are the basic features of the advanced printing system:

3.1.1 Key features

Note: On Windows, the HELIOS Shared Memory printer output interface ("shmif") is not available.

The Windows TCP/IP Print Server may interfere with the HELIOS LPR if print jobs are received via the "Remote LPR" protocol. This is because it uses the same port (515). The HELIOS LPR can only work correctly if the Windows TCP/IP Print Server is turned off:

On Windows, open Start > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services.

Select the TCP/IP Print Server item from the list, open it and click the Stop button in the Service status section. To permanently disable the TCP/IP Print Server service, select Disabled from the Startup type pull-down menu (Fig. 15). After all settings have been done, click the OK button.

3.2 Windows printing to HELIOS queues

Mac OS X uses the PAP or TCP printing system, UNIX systems use Remote LPR. Windows printing is based on SMB/CIFS. HELIOS print monitor manages forwarding SMB/CIFS print jobs into the HELIOS printing system. The HELIOS print monitor must be installed on the host. During the installation of the HELIOS software it is automatically installed into the Windows system. The necessary driver is described in the Driver section below.

Creating a Windows printer that prints to a HELIOS queue:

Go to Start > Printers and Faxes > Add a printer.

Fig. 16: Add Printer Wizard window

Select Local printer attached to this computer and click the Next > button. From the Use the following port pop-up menu select a HELIOS queue (Fig. 16).

Important: The selected printer must be marked as (HELIOS Queue), compare pull-down menu entries in Fig. 16)!

Select the printer manufacturer and model from the lists and click Next >.

As proposed by the wizard, you should keep the already existing printer driver. Otherwise you must specify a new printer driver later. Click Next >.

Name the printer and specify whether you want to make the printer the default printer. Click Next >.

Select printer sharing and specify a printer share name, or just accept the proposed name (for shared printer names, Windows only allows up to 8 characters). Click Next >.

You may optionally enter information on the printer location (e.g. "HELIOS_Windows") and comments. Click Next >.

Specify if you wish to print a test page (e.g. to verify the HELIOS print monitor installation). Click Next >.

The "Add Printer Wizard" gives you a summary of the printer settings. Click Finish to complete the installation.

Now the new printer appears in the Printers and Faxes window (Fig. 17).

Driver

During the HELIOS software installation, via the command "start-helios -i", the HELIOS print monitor driver "HELIOSPrinterMon_s.dll" (or "HELIOSPrinterMon64_s.dll" - depending on the architecture) is copied from "HELIOSDIR\etc\printmon" into the "WINDOWS\system32" folder.

Note: Sometimes the driver is busy in the Windows folder so that updating the "HELIOSPrinterMon_s.dll" does not work. Reboot, then try again.

3.3 PAP and HELIOS TCP Printing

For printing from a Mac client to the HELIOS printing system, HELIOS provides the Macintosh PAP and HELIOS TCP printers.

Macintosh PAP

If the server has SFM (Services for Macintosh) installed, HELIOS Admin can set up the HELIOS queues as Macintosh - PAP. Mac clients can then browse for AppleTalk PAP printers, add the printers to the Mac client using the Mac OS X "Printer Setup Utility" and print from the client to the server.

HELIOS TCP

Or, for better performance, or if SFM is not running, print queues can be published as HELIOS TCP printers. For this to work, the "HELIOS TCP" print driver must be installed on each Mac client.

The following table gives an overview on the required plug-in that has to be installed for configuring the HELIOS TCP printer.

HELIOSTCPPrinter.dmg

Mac OS 9

Installing and configuring Macintosh PAP and HELIOS TCP printers is described in the chapters "Printer spooler settings", "PAP printer output settings" and "HELIOS TCP/IP printer driver" in the EtherShare UB manual. The manual is available as PDF file (esUB-e.pdf) on the HELIOS CD-ROM.
