HELIOS EtherShare OPI 2.1 User manual

A 4: Notes for PCShare users
With the HELIOS PCShare software you can connect Windows PCs to your network and use the EtherShare OPI services. For perfect co-operation with EtherShare 2.6 and EtherShare OPI 2.1 you have to install PCShare 3.0. You can then work on volumes shared with EtherShare 2.6 clients. The server recognizes the EtherShare resource fork directories ".rsrc" and updates files in these directories when a PCShare client moves, deletes, or renames them.
If Create Layouts is activated on a specific volume, EtherShare OPI will create layouts of all image files, regardless of whether they come from a Macintosh or PC client. OPI generates layout files always according to the PC Layouts checkbox in EtherShare Admin's Volume settings. Thus, if you want to have PC-compatible layouts of all images (e.g. for working on a volume shared with PCShare) - even if they are coming from a Macintosh - you have to activate the PC Layouts option for this specific volume (see PC Layouts in chapter 6.4 "Volume settings").
UTF8 support
PCShare 3.0 support includes UTF8 volume character sets, long file names, and file locking. However, PCShare support is only enabled if PCShare is licensed either by a demo or full license. OPI does not make any precautions for sticking to the 8dot3 file name syntax when creating layout files, etc. These files will not be seen anymore by old PCShare 2.5 clients. As this syntax collides with the .lay setting, the OPI server will automatically switch to the layout folder option when generating PC layouts (compare chapter 6.3 "OPI server settings").

Important: "opisrv" does not create an automatic layout image in case a PCShare-based file is renamed and the new file name does not end on one of the known image file suffixes.

Flags to be set in PCShare
If you want to use image files cross-platform and share volumes between Macintosh and Windows clients, we recommend to set the following flags in the "Export Volumes" dialog in the PCShare Admin:
"Hide `dot' files" to prevent seeing the ".rsrc" and other files as shortnames on a PC client.
"Close option" to make sure, that PCShare always closes a file to allow a Macintosh client to operate on consistent data.
