1. World of HELIOS: Many UB2 installations every day
Our new HELIOS UB2 release is now shipping for over a month. We are glad to share with you that many customers have successfully upgraded to the HELIOS UB2 product versions, which work without problems. In addition, several feature updates have been released including InDesign CS 5.5 document previews and Mac OS X Lion server support.

UB2 highlights include:
  • Apple Spotlight compatible searches for Mac, Windows, and Web users
  • Performance and compatibility enhancements for AFP and SMB file servers
  • WebShare UB2 previews of multi-page PDFs and Office documents
  • Web-based proofing with threaded annotations for easy remote collaboration
  • New AD/PDC authentication system
  • Support for Lion clients
  • Support for new servers (RedHat 6, Solaris 11, Mac OS X 10.7)
Our bug and feature tracking system lists a total of 500 changes for the UB2 release, which is more than in any previous HELIOS product release. A detailed list of major features introduced can be found on the HELIOS web site, click on What is new in UB2.

We wish all customers a successful upgrade to HELIOS UB2.

PS: There is a 30% HELIOS UB2 upgrade intro pricing promotion until the end of October 2011.

2. Meet HELIOS in Vienna or Zurich
The upcoming IFRA Expo 2011 will take place in Vienna from October 10-12 (HELIOS booth #A520), and the Print & Publishing Switzerland 2011 will take place in Zurich on October 26 & 27 (SCS SOLID Computer AG booth). You are welcome to visit HELIOS at one of these two events. The main show highlight will be the new HELIOS UB2 release, with a focus on Spotlight search and Web-based proofing with threaded annotations for easy remote collaboration.

You are welcome to visit us to receive a demo or just to discuss your needs and feedback with us.

3. Superior 10 Gigabit Ethernet performance under Linux
We have lately tested an IBM x3650 server running HELIOS UB2 under SUSE Linux with the QLogic CNA 10 Gb Ethernet adapter. HELIOS LanTest shows 500 MByte reading and writing performance with a single 10 Gb Ethernet client. The built-in RAID brings about 900 MByte reading and 500 MByte writing performance within the file system (system with all disks equipped). This clearly shows that x86-based hardware with Linux offers first-class performance running HELIOS UB2 file server solutions. The following table shows the theoretical performance of Ethernet networks and estimates of possible client performance.

Network
MB/s
PC clients handling this
10 Mbit Ethernet
1 MB
Every PC in the last 20 years
100 Mbit Ethernet
10 MB
Every PC in the last 15 years
1 Gbit Ethernet
100 MB
500 MHz PCs in the last 10 years
10 Gbit Ethernet
1000 MB
Multicore PCs since 2010

This table clearly shows that today's PCs can easily utilize Ethernet networks with hundreds of megabytes per second. For medium and larger networks 10 Gb Ethernet is required to keep up with the client performance. Also, the usage of servers has changed these days; network backups are common and some clients even run VM images mounted from a server rather than sharing small files.

We look forward to see more 10 Gb Ethernet networks.
