1. World of HELIOS: Subscription adds flexibility
Did you know that HELIOS products and user expansions can be rented?
Basically, instead of purchasing the software, it can be rented
for a period of one year. This means that using HELIOS software
for short terms without long-term investment has become easier
and more attractive. Lately we added the possibility to mix purchased
and rented products; details can be found in our press release
at:
We feel that the yearly software subscription offer is a modern
way for customers to quickly implement HELIOS solutions with very
little budget and risk.

2. Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard client support
Apple has just released Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), and we are
pleased to report that Mac clients running Snow Leopard are fully
compatible with HELIOS UB+ based servers. EtherShare volumes and
print queues, as well as all other services work the same as with
Mac OS X 10.5 clients.
3. Time Machine backup server
Great news for Mac users: HELIOS AFP volumes can now be used as
a backup disk for "Time Machine" backups from Mac clients.
The updated HELIOS Admin (u0831) can be used to enable "Time
Machine Backup" in the volume configuration. If a HELIOS
volume is mounted and "Time Machine Backup" is enabled,
"Time Machine" on the Mac OS X client detects the volume,
and it can be selected as a backup device. Backups are saved on
the server as a bundle directory per workstation containing HFS
disk images. "Time Machine" remembers the user name/password
and automatically creates a hidden AFP connection when the backup
schedule is active.
This is really cool, it works with 10.5 and 10.6 clients without
any additional software installation and setup, pretty much like
a connected USB backup disk.
The main advantages are:
- Automatic hourly, daily and weekly backups
- Easy restore by users using the “Time Machine” Finder
interface
- Mac backups are stored as HFS disk images on the server (no
trouble with millions of files)
- No software installation needed
- Excellent backup performance it is really fast!
- Easy Mac disaster restore (Mac “Migration Assistant” can
restore entire Mac from Time Machine Backup)
We all know that today's Mac disks are pretty large and users
tend to save important work locally. Mobile users have additional
risk of losing their data. The new Time Machine Backup Server
support allows overcoming these problems.
We love to backup your Macs!
