1. World of HELIOS: Mac workstation backup
As today's workstation disks are growing pretty large, users often
save their stuff on local disks without considering that this
data needs to be included in the backup and restore strategy.
This represents a big challenge for IT administrators. Any ideas
how to deal with this?
We know how – Watch out for the next newsletter for some ideas.
2. XPress 8.1 PDF transparency support
Good news from Quark this week! The new XPress 8.1 fixes several
OPI-related problems and supports PDF export with true transparency.
It preserves transparent objects designed within the XPress document
and generates a true transparent PDF document. The PDF document
is fully compatible with the HELIOS PDF-native OPI image replacement
workflow.
This allows modern re-purposing DTP workflows, including server-based
image replacement with color management, remote DTP, and accelerates
the printing process in a big way.
We worked closly together with Quark to enhance XPress transparency
support. We would like to thank everyone who helped to get this
done.
3. HELIOS ScriptAssistant to automate hot folder workflows
We are glad to inform you that a big wish list item for ImageServer
customers is available now. ImageServer UB+ brings built-in image
conversion with ICC color management which can be automated via
hot folders using the Script Server service. Additional remote
automation can be done via Tool Server including remote Photoshop
or MS Office automation. So far, so good. However, customers asked
for a easy solution to create standard hot folder setups to automate
HELIOS server capabilities without a need for hands-on scripting.
With the new HELIOS ScriptAssistant application, hot folder workflow
setup is now child's play. ScriptAssistant simplifies the creation
of scripts for the HELIOS Script Server hot folder automation
system. Now automating image conversion, PDF printing, PostScript
printing, and PDF-native OPI is possible for any user. Even automation
of client applications via HELIOS Tool Server is only a few clicks
away. Simply select the desired options, and ScriptAssistant will
create a Perl script, ready for use by Script Server.
Workflow and process automation using Script Server is being deployed
profitably by leading HELIOS customers, greatly reducing costs
and speeding production. With ScriptAssistant it becomes even
easier to take advantage of Script Server's power and flexibility.
The new HELIOS ScriptAssistant application is now available for
Mac and Windows, for download at:

4. Asian fonts support in PDF HandShake
Double-byte Type-1 and TrueType CID fonts are now fully supported
in PDF HandShake as of the HELIOS UB+/CD024 update. These fonts
are typically used for Asian characters, and can be very complex
with thousand of glyphs. In addition, full support for vertical
text layout and right-to-left languages is included. With these
enhancements, PDF HandShake is ideal for PDF creation, pre-flighting,
and printing worldwide (whatever language is in use). Noboru Wakabayashi,
Manager of Marketing Communications of Japan-based Hulinks Inc.
reports, “We are pleased to hear PDF HandShake now fully supports
Japanese characters. Japanese customers will recognize and get
the full potential of PDF HandShake for their PDF production workflows.”.
