1. World of HELIOS: Apple Mac computers are becoming much more popular
Something interesting from the Apple Developers Conference (WWDC) concerning software development: starting with the new macOS 10.15, iPad apps can also be used on the Mac (macOS). For this purpose Apple has made available many iPad libraries to the Mac. It is to be expected that many of the millions of iPad apps will be ported to the Mac because the Xcode development environment can automatically create iOS, iPad, and Mac apps, based on the same code base.

This means for the Mac: up to one million of new apps, many little tools that help make the Mac platform significantly more attractive. Trend-setting and based on the mere number of apps, Apple will substantionally increase the competition with Windows. I would predict there is the potential that Mac desktops may pass Windows desktops by in the next few years.

I am curious to see how this will develop.

2. HELIOS Universal File Server supports upcoming macOS “Catalina” clients
Last week we got our hands on the upcoming macOS operating system 10.15 (aka Catalina). The latest beta version has full support for AFP network connected volumes and networked printer queues as provided by HELIOS Universal File Server UB64. We have started testing Catalina as a network client connected to our servers and it looks very good – so far we have only found problems in the Spotlight search which we reported to Apple.

HELIOS SMB file server support for Mac is still under development. The new Catalina version works with AFP and SMB therefore customers can use the latest HELIOS products versions to support their Mac environments.

We keep you updated.

3. HELIOS server solutions on the upcoming macOS 10.15 (e.g. Mac Pro)
The new Mac Pro looks promising to be used as a desktop workstation. Apple macOS 10.15 added a lot of security restrictions for file access, e.g. asking users if they are permitted to access documents, etc.

We are developing major changes in our software to run HELIOS server solutions on macOS 10.15, which is usually used for evaluation/testing/support environments by our partners and some customers. We continue to support HELIOS server solutions on macOS 10.15 as good as possible.

At present, it is not clear if the new Mac Pro (macOS 10.15) can be used in headless server production environments. We continue evaluating the new macOS and the new Mac Pro. We are working on the necessary developments to reach best compatibility to run HELIOS server solutions on the latest Apple operating system and hardware.

More information will be provided in future newsletters.

4. Linus Tech Tips: thoughts on Apple's new Mac Pro
As the new Mac Pro is subject to several discussions, it may be of interest to review the “Linus Tech Tips” about Apple's new product. In his videos he gives a lot of insight information:
